Primary standards and guidance for checking how barcode data should be encoded and used.
GS1 General Specifications, current version
GS1 publishes the core specifications for identifiers, Application Identifiers and symbol quality. The GS1 standards repository lists General Specifications version 26.0.0, updated January 2026. Use the latest official edition and any applicable change notices.
GS1 Application Identifiers and FNC1
GS1 Application Identifiers distinguish GTIN, lot, expiry and serial data. GS1-128 starts with FNC1; additional separators are needed between certain variable-length fields. Parentheses in readable input are not encoded as literal characters.
Official GTIN allocation
BarcodeOn can calculate a check digit and draw a symbol, but it does not allocate GS1 identification numbers. GS1 member organisations provide official GTIN allocation for businesses.
Print verification
Minimum bar dimensions, quiet zones and verification requirements depend on the symbology and use case. Confirm the appropriate GS1 symbol specification table and test the final printed label with suitable scanning and verification equipment.
