Code 128: character sets and practical use

Choose Code 128 for internal IDs

Code 128 is a high-density linear barcode for warehouse locations, carton IDs, serial references and inventory labels. It is not a GS1-issued retail product number. A scanner reads the encoded characters; your system decides what the identifier means.

Check the character set before printing

This generator accepts printable ASCII characters (Code Set B) and automatically uses numeric compression where supported. Control characters and non-Latin text are not directly encoded. For GS1 application identifiers, use the separate GS1-128 tool rather than ordinary Code 128.

Print with sufficient white space

Keep the bars sharply rendered, avoid stretching the symbol disproportionately and leave a clear quiet zone on both sides. Try the intended scanner with the smallest label and longest real value before printing a large batch.

Code 128 versus GS1-128

Code 128 is a general-purpose symbology for alphanumeric data. GS1-128 uses Code 128 with GS1 application identifiers and FNC1 rules to encode structured supply-chain information. Do not label arbitrary Code 128 content as GS1-128.

Good internal identifier design

Use stable unique identifiers such as SKU-000123 or BIN-A17. Decide whether scanners should transmit prefixes or suffixes, and avoid relying on the appearance of a barcode to identify the product.

Print quality

Preserve quiet zones and avoid squeezing bars horizontally. Test both a handheld scanner and the intended warehouse or retail device on the printed output.

Frequently asked questions

Does Code 128 assign a unique product number?

No. Code 128 encodes your text; it does not allocate or verify globally unique identifiers. Obtain an appropriate GS1 GTIN if a retailer requires one.

Can I encode letters and numbers together?

Yes, printable Latin letters, numbers, spaces and common punctuation are supported. Unicode characters outside the supported set require another encoding approach.

Why might a scanner fail to read a Code 128 label?

Typical causes are low contrast, narrow modules, insufficient quiet zone, distortion during resizing or incompatible scanner settings. Test the final printed size.
