A GTIN-13 has 13 numeric digits. Enter 12 digits to calculate the final check digit, or enter all 13 to verify it. The check digit detects many typing errors but does not prove that a number has been allocated to your business.

EAN-13: GTIN-13 and retail scanning
A visually valid EAN-13 image is not the same as an officially licensed retail identifier. For real product listings and point-of-sale distribution, check the retailer requirements and obtain a legitimate GTIN through a GS1 member organisation.
EAN-13 uses a fixed encoding structure. Preserve the required quiet zones, guard bars and human-readable digits. Do not crop the white margin. Verify the final printed label using the actual POS scanner, not just an on-screen preview.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a random 13-digit number on products?
A mathematically valid check digit does not guarantee uniqueness or GS1 allocation. For retail use, obtain an authorised GTIN.
What happens if I enter only 12 digits?
BarcodeOn computes the 13th check digit and displays the complete EAN-13 value.
Is EAN-13 the same as JAN in Japan?
JAN is the Japanese retail usage of the EAN-13/GTIN-13 family. A Japanese product identifier still follows GS1 allocation rules.
Whether a generated barcode can be used at work depends on your workplace rules and scanner settings.
